FAQ

What is a smokeless fire pit and how does it reduce smoke?

A smokeless or low-smoke fire pit burns wood more efficiently. Clever airflow and double-wall design allows for secondary combustion, reducing smoke.

What can I burn in a fire pit, and what type of wood should I use?

Always use dry, seasoned hardwood like manuka, oak, gum, or macrocarpa. Avoid wet, green, or chemically treated wood. Don’t burn trash, plastics, or accelerants like petrol or lighter fluid.

Why is my fire pit producing smoke?

Your fire pit may produce smoke initially when lighting. Once the fire reaches a hot temperature, secondary combustion will reburn the smoke, and the fire can handle larger quantities of wood.

Using the wrong fuel, treated wood, or wood with high moisture will also cause smoke. Gusts of wind can create puffs of smoke as well.

Overfilling the fire pit too early is a common cause of smoke. When lighting a fire, start with minimal kindling and gradually add wood - This is key!

Too much wood, newspaper, or other material can block airflow and increase smoke. We recommend using a fire starter and kindling only to get the fire going.

Can I use the fire pit on my deck?

We do not recommend using a fire pit on a deck without a heat-resistant mat. We take no responsibility for any damage if a heat mat is not used. Fire pits get very hot, including the base, so always use a heat-resistant mat or place the pit on a non-flammable surface to protect your deck or patio.

Are Southern Firepits portable?

Yes. They are designed to be lightweight and easy to move with the handles, so you can take them to the beach, campsite, or around your backyard.

Do not move when firepit is lit! Handles get very hot once firepit is burning.

How do I care for and clean my fire pit?

After each use, let the pit cool completely. Remove ash to keep airflow clear. Store in a dry spot or use a cover/lid.

How do I light a fire pit?

We recommend a Firestarter with small kindling to light the fire, then gradually add larger pieces of wood. Avoid overloading the pit so air can flow freely, keeping smoke low.

Can I cook over a Southern Firepit?

Yes. You can roast marshmallows, cook meals, or use it like a BBQ. For the best results, let the flames die down to hot embers before cooking, as high flames can burn food quickly.

Is it safe to use?

Yes, when used responsibly. Always use outdoors, keep kids and pets at a safe distance, never leave the fire unattended, and have water or a fire extinguisher nearby. Check local council guidelines for fire regulations. Never touch or move the fire pit while it is lit.

FAQ Disclaimer

Southern Firepits are designed to provide a low-smoke experience using dry, seasoned wood, airflow, and secondary combustion. However, no fire pit can be completely smoke-free. Temporary smoke may occur due to starting or dying fires, wet or treated wood, overloading the fire pit, blocked airflow, or windy conditions. Always follow safety instructions and use recommended fuels. Use of your fire pit is at your own risk, and Southern Firepits accepts no liability for smoke, fire, or heat-related issues.
